Just curious. Did you pick these bands based on them having the worst names possible?
I like Ski Lodge. I'm disappointed Color War isn't on this list though.
Plates of Cake's LP is a gem!
I see your comment and raise you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcttUQooVMY
Congrats to all the bands that made this list. The sad part is, nothing here sounds even remotely new...lacking any semblance of passion or urgency or even wanting to actually be doing what their doing. Half the bands sound bored...and in effect, bores the discerning listener. I find the honorable mentions section to actually have more interesting sounds than the gimmicky 8 that have been chosen. Let's face it, when it comes to these lists, NY underground music has been reduced to echoes...echoes of music that has already been brilliantly crafted in decades past, and now recycled and collaged so many times that nothings really even moving or inspiring. You'd think that's what the underground is all about, is breaking these norms but alas, the flavors seem to more or less be the same. So while it's commendable to make an annual list as locally esteemed as The L's Top 8, nothing here is like "WOW! That's fucking awesome! Who is this band?"
what is slarlight?
Man, sorry to say this year's list is pretty weak. Yuck
Never thought of myself as a 'tough guy critic' but now that you've called me out, I think I'll embrace it! Thanks, 'eventsfashionsexbooks.' / Craig
"fourstringheroes"- There is a reason you are not a music critic, probably not even a musician, based on your writing skills and musical knowledge its obvious no one would pay you to do either. Don't ya just love how the anonymity of the internet brings out the tough guy critic in all of us?
Every band here is mediocre! Derivative down to its last notes! Not a note of innovation in the bunch! From the samples you put up:
Grand Rapids = bad Richard Hell
second guy = mediocre Undertones ripoff
Radical dads = current Brooklyn jittery crap rock ripoff
rathborne = lifeless sixties garage ripoff
slowdance = lifeless synth rock ripoff
yellow ostrich = writing songs out of those riffs most others would have tossed away,
with added bonus dirty projectors dumbness ripoff, and
family trees - well actually this isn't too bad. he sings like a dying bird, but i like the music. the least pretentious of the lot.
oh, new york rock, you are SO overrated it's sick. mind you, I've never once read the L mag for its music coverage, so there you go.
you made a BIG overlook.
DELUKA is living in Brooklyn and they are THE next big
alt /indie/dance/rock band to break out!
be on the look out or go to facebook or itunes to check them out.
You have, very unfortunately, overlooked an amazingly talented and unique Brooklyn based band, Lake Street Dive. THEY are unreal good.
Slowdance is mind blowing
Chiptune is going to be the new punk. Check out The Protomen.

Oh, hey beard-o-phile. Cool name. Of the many things I so enjoy about your comment, the one thing I'm most fond of is how you put "band to watch" in quotations, even though the name of the feature is "8 NYC Bands You Need to Hear." I guess you had to make your grade-school-level joke work somehow, right?
