I don't know anything about art, but I liked your articles. Your voice made art more relatable.
Well done, Sam!!!
Just wanted to let you know that Dance Theater Workshop no longer exists. It's now called New York Live Arts after a merger with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company.
If you're going to write dismissive reviews without any real content or examination of the piece you're supposed to be reviewing you should at least fact check it.
Also, please read this: http://www.brooklynrail.org/2012/12/artseen/re-art-criticism-today-martha
Art Criticism should be thoughtful, should place work in context, and should give the reader a way to understand and access the work. Your piece does none of this. Anybody can go online and tell the world they thought a particular work of art was pointless. That is not your job. Please take your role more seriously.
Also, please tell your editor to send someone who knows about and/or has a meaningful relationship to/knowledge of dance to the next dance performance they want to review.
I agree with this brilliantly worded piece. I was trying to find something online to show a friend why I felt that Blue Jasmine, while on the surface was about Madoff, was more about Mia.
That ending.. what can I say. Hell hath no fury, etc.
I hate paying full price for anything. For restaurant deals and bar specials in NYC I use the book 365 Guide New York City. www.365guidenyc.com It saves me a ton.
Uh. Reality check. What Hollywood does may not be "important" but they do work hard, making movies isn't easy, the difference between this trade and any other was the choice the person made to so it. Half the people that crossed that stage have normal grinds, and only got all dolled up for the oscars. The Oscars may represent and exclusive elite but people do work hard to get there, hell, it's one of the few industries where things aren't just up and handed to you.
Jimmy Kimmel's sketch was calling out double standards. Lupita is an awesome actress and woman of color but she didn't come from simple means. I'll agree Hollywood shouldn't throw itself a little glitzy ceremony and party... But only if every other industry stops throwing themselves awards and parties. The only difference between the Oscars and what other ceremonies do is its televised. If it bothers you that much, turn it off maybe?
This is ridiculous because I think a ton of us in the industry do work hard and do struggle, and yes, do dream that maybe one day we get to hold that gold statuette, but we're far from the social elite and this article seems to represent the entire industry as a whole as well as the people who worked hard to earned those rewards, while you're just mad at a few actors you see as haves while others have not.
Sad. I trusted you way more than the Jerry Saltz ilk.
Women on TV cheat on their husbands because that is the propaganda which is used to destroy strong families. Turn off the propaganda machine TV. Talmudvision has destroyed America.
Art date illustration got her high beams on.
My sympathies and good wishes to Lisa Jones. As a human being I am not perfect, but looking at your profile pic, I can't help but point out the poisons you conveyed on this blog. Generalizing us Millennials as "squeaky Kim Kardashians", using slander such as "douchebag", etc. As one who has taken Refuge with the Three Gems, I can only share my knowledge of the Dharma with you, and maintain that I, as a human being, remain far from Enlightenment. But don't your words and responses come off as complacent, ignorant, hostile, and shallow? Recall the Three Poisons: ignorance, hostility, and attachment. Through your strong, somewhat acidic comments, I detected ignorance and hostility. Now if the Lotus Master( think that's who it is) profile pic of yours carries any personal meaning for you.......I think I've said what needs to be said. But it would be nice to know exactly what WAS your motive for such a profile pic choice.
Now for the others, I presume, from the Boomer generation on this blog, I have something to add. Assuming Lisa is a Boomer, possibly explains her choice of profile pic, then it would make more logical sense that, that generations economic and political decisions reflect the Counterculture ideologies they were known for. Peace, civil liberty, anti poverty, and human rights were values I took from the history book chapters of the period( not to mention the Aggie bookstore sold those books for rock-bottom clearance prices, pun intended). Why have the generation dominated by Boomers been the decades we saw widening wealth gaps, more profound foreign military operations (aka wars), and a war on the working poor fueled by corporate greed and outsourcing?
Historically speaking, it seems more to me that Boomers utilized the ideologies of the Silent Generation and the oppressed to justify their unwillingness to go to war, or to adhere to the Greatest Generation's values of serving your country and working for it. We know that's what the Counterculture was all about: not wanting to go to war or do what Mom and dad did. The only difference was the Boomers still had a robust, unionized economy to return to once they "got it together". Education was tremendously cheaper. One summer working part time can pay for a year of college. In contrast, I noticed many of my friends who volunteered to go to Iraq and Afghanistan, joined ROTC, and the rest of us who did not engage in sexual debauchery or over experimentation of drugs. Working a year part time on multiple jobs can barely pay for one semester. Veterans get beaten by police for protesting poor civilian job prospects. Whether we find meaningful employment that pays the bills and feeds our bellies remains to be seen. In the end, both of our cohorts seemed raised with values and a sense of duty. The only difference is the former had something to fall back to, but we, the latter don't because it was slowly dismantled by the former over the course of three decades.
So I want to ask Boomers: why did you adopt progressive ideologies and mystic eastern traditions? Was it because you actually believed in those values or life was too good back then to assume any social responsibilities?

Did you know that condoms ARE NOT 100% sure? There isn't any protection that is 100% sure. Whenever you have sex, no matter if you use protection, you have a chance to get pregnant. Protection CAN FAIL.

One way to think of this is that Richard Serra's consistently awe-evoking, maximalist sculpture and your response to it is a kind of microcosm of the critique leveled against cold, agonistic, divorced-from-political-realities modernism and modernism's eventual usurpation by post-modern work that quite intentionally confronts the viewer with the detritus and traces of human life (and with the artifice of making work for cultural consumption).
In other words, your response, clear and convincing, is part of a larger discursive and historical shift away from awe, respect for "mastery", and corollary attitudes towards, I would suggest, an appreciation for story, for objects that provoke relations that carry on after the experience, for an indication of a human pulse and a desire for a recognition of our own presence as viewers.
I just do not like this woman. she is not very attractive and her voice is far from it as well. In each role I've seen of her, she acts whiny and annoying and I can never bring myself to call her funny. There is a reason why this woman was canned from SNL after 1 season. She's a hack.
