I love and live in red hook. LOVE RED HOOK. but there is so much crime and shooting and projects and drugs and gangs here, it would be remiss of me to point out what a disservice this article is doing by by saying it's one of the 'most livable neighborhoods in brooklyn' it's really not. nice place to visit, go to ikea and then get a taco and then go back to somewhere even marginally safer. I'm not even exagerrating, a cop just shot and killed someone on the corner I walk across every day, this past thursday night..a guy soliciting an undercover prostitute. this comment will probably be removed, so all I'm saying is...please be more 'accurate' with your 'lists'.

Fort Greene and Clinton Hill have always been great. Take a look at Nelson George's film "Brooklyn Boheme"! Cool has been here not the "new" hipsters.

There are, like 15 neighborhoods further south than BoCoCa (sorry for the acronym)- how is that considered South Brooklyn? Poor choice.

Again with the lists? I guess you have data that show your readers love pointless arbitrary lists. Ten this. Thirteen that. Five of those. Seven of these. It was cute at the beginning but now it's ripe for parody and getting annoying. And now you write about OTHER magazines' lists. Maybe you could skip the lists for a while? Or is that all your readers care about? I guess you know your demographics, but this makes me think your readers must be dullards. How about the five most moronic lists The L Magazine and Brooklyn Magazine have published?

Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill are all included as "South Brooklyn," near the top.

There are some responsibilities that tie the host too, it's not opening your door to strangers and then treating them as garbage when they arrive.. maybe it's a hipster thing? .. the hosts are usually assumed to be interested in their guests, that's why they're inviting them over. It's not about just sleeping on a different couch than your own for a night! :) Getting to know new interesting people is essential part of CouchSurfing. Those were BAD, BAD hosts from hell, and they shouldn't be hosting at all if they can't not argue in the middle of the night when they have company.
That's ridiculous, when you have guests you focus on them..naturally. I thought that would be self-evident to other ppl as well?
Although there's no money exchange, there's still things that are customary, like conversation with guests, cooking with them, showing them around town and overall taking care of them..making them feel welcome. That's what GOOD hosts do.
I hope he didn't give them positive feedback after a weekend of scared sneaking around and not feeling welcome at all.

Here is my personal take on Mr. Restler:
I met him for the first time a few weeks ago.
In the heat and humidity of a particularly harsh New York City summer, Lincoln was walking from house to house, from block to block, day after day - meeting the people of our Brooklyn community.... talking to them about their concerns and their problems, ... asking them what needed to be maintained, and what needed to be improved.
I was impressed: this kind of dedication and hands-on effort is rare among aspiring politicians. Usually when they're running for something you might find them standing at a subway stop for a half-hour, handing out a few leaflets - IF you're lucky.
I was even more impressed when I checked the web and found that Lincoln Restler's position was unsalaried!
Mr. Restler has my support in Thursday's election for Democratic State Committee....because Brooklyn needs more people politics - and less machine politics.
