Spare is a terrible way to describe his prose, I think it's the polar opposite of spare, all meat, no bone....
...a great American story teller.
/The Road/ is "spare, action-describing prose sometimes interrupted with dialogue"? Really? From the NYTimes review: On the Interstate “long lines of charred and rusting cars” are “sitting in a stiff gray sludge of melted rubber. ... The incinerate corpses shrunk to the size of a child and propped on the bare springs of the seats. Ten thousand dreams ensepulchred within their crozzled hearts.” Just sayin'.
I think he does a good job of juxtaposing the love/savagery in order to fully appreciate the extremes of both, leaving one gratefull for love.
Well, if that's all you got it's only mildly violent compared to Blood Meridian, a book that's arguably the best work of 20th Century American literature.
Some of these are great books. Thanks for sharing!
So nice that Mr. Gaiman has replaced the archetypical wicked stepmother with a nanny. Sorry nannies, but you don't have as bad a rap as centuries' worth of so-called wicked stepmoms. We've tried to turn the tide and present stepmothers in a positive light in our own fairytale called My Fairy Stepmother. This review makes me want to read the collection of poetry!
I, too, have always thought there was something mystical about money. Love the review!
Seldom does a review of a book of contemporary poetry send me scurrying to the bookseller, but this one is likely to do just that. Ms. Black appears to be a major talent.
Disdain for histrionics sounds good to me.
Great review!! Sounds like an interesting book. The moving toward God and orgasm, though, to me sounds mystical--I think particularly of Bernini's famous sculpture of St. Teresa of Avila, which maybe suggests an opening in the Puritan self-paring, some more noise. I'd be curious to see what happens to that dynamic as the book progresses into the language of financial exchange and ritual sacrifice. I'll have to check it out.

haha, no, actually I just make small marks in the margins, but "I made small notations in the margins throughout my copy of this book" seemed clunky as a lede.
Henry, you're not one of those people who used to highlight entire paragraphs, nay, pages, of their college textbooks, are you? Please explain.
