In their latest production Propeller takes the realities of Shakespeare’s casting constraints (men only) into consideration, staging this most self-conscious of showdowns between the sexes with an all-male cast. Merchant also literally trades in the murky anti-Semitism of its time, so the elaborate courtroom humiliation of Shylock should prove an interesting challenge for the upbeat, highly physical and humor-driven style of Propeller’s productions. And who knows, at a moment when everyone seems to be defaulting on their loans, maybe Shakespeare even can teach us a thing or two about personal finances.
