The Belgian painted is something of an art historical oddity, existing largely outside any movement or art scene. He rarely ventured far from his hometown, where he lived his entire life surrounded by the objects from the trinket shop his family operated. Appropriately, his paintings are filled with bizarre visions of skulls, masks, omens of death, comic figures and Biblical imagery all rendered in spectacular expressionist style.
