I never saw the movie because I always believed Lee to be a forced anti-intellectual. Your piece gives the film weight, but I wonder if it's even deserved. Lee likes to play with people because he gets away with it. I see him as an upper middle class black person who is a little bit disdainful of his parents achievements, because his upbringing doesn't fit the street cred script he prefers to peddle. Yes, he's an "artist," but ultiimately he is a dishonest one.
