Total rubbish. Canada, by all accounts, has a team composed almost entirely of future hall of famers. The WSJ published the collective NHL salaries off the four remaining teams this morning--Canada's team earns more than the Finn and Slovak teams combined. There's absolutely no way they should lose to anyone, ever. If you are not Canadian, how could you possibly want this team to win? Even if you like Canadians (and I generally do), how could you root for this team?
To take your analogy: If you and your friend want to date the same person and they more interested than you are, then, yes, you do the gracious thing and bow out. But what of your friend already dates scores of women, is immensely wealthy, and is way better looking than you are? Well, then, fuck that asshole.
I agree that Crosby is absolutely no fun on the ice and that Ovechkin is the anti-Crosby. Now, I love the Caps more than any living thing and Ovechkin has already established himself as the greatest Cap of all time, but I am guessing in real life he is kind of an a-hole, while I bet Crosby is probably really nice and Canadian (which I suppose is redundant). Ovechkin will likely be dead by 28--having no fear is great if you are playing hockey, not so good otherwise.
As for Avery, he is one of those Dale Hunter-type players that everyone hates unless he is on your team. Accordingly, I hate Avery. He's a good agitator, though.
Hockey is as good as it has ever been. Ovechkin is on pace for 92 goals! Most of the stars are under 25 and with players like Tavares and Duchene, the future looks bright.
