Re: “What We Talk About When We Talk About Hipsters

Why do we need the "hipster" label at all? The "hipster" ideal is not fresh. If you told Miles Davis, Josephine Baker, David Hockney, or anyone on your slideshow that you were labeling them, "hipster" or any other term, I think they would either, a)laugh at you, b) not care one straw or c) deck you.

I find it funny that you feel the need to justify who the hipster community is by adding some of our finest thinkers, artists and revolutionaries to your list. (Just fyi, George Sands was more than just a woman writer who used a male nom de plume and was Chopin's lover. And I really don't want to get into the other "Bill and Ted's excellent adventure" descriptions there are for other amazing people in the slide show.)

The "hipster" term is no longer relevant. (I'm not sure it ever really was) It has been reduced to a characture: a beard, vintage clothing, tight jeans, PBR, liking the same music, etc. It has been reduced to a uniform. Where is the individuality?

Perhaps you are referring to people who are creative, who think outside of the box, and well, don't give a crap about being pigeon holed into any terminology for who they and therefore don't need your ego boost. They are perfectly fine with who they are, comfortable with how they dress, with the music they like. They have no need to be patted on the back for their individuality. They don't fight every day to be different, or to be noticed because they try so hard to be unique or ironic. They are the essence of cool. The Algonquins, the true radicals, they are the movers and the shakers. And, no, you'll never be able to label them. They don't need your labels or approval.

"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone elses opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
