The above article fails to mention that independents are also getting hit hard by the very same forces that have devastated the majors. Actually, for small independents, where even sales of 1,000 albums can mean the difference between profitability and operating in the red, ripping has arguably had an even worse effect. Every indie I know --and that includes fair and artist-friendly ones -- has seen its revenue drop to precipitous levels, and there are no clear solutions in sight. Indies that used to pay artists well -- with album advances, generous remix fees, recording advances, etc. -- are now basically reduced to saying, well we can't pay you anything, but we'll release it for you and see what happens.
