I am a current college student and present unpaid intern and this article and the accompanying NYtimes piece have both been extremely illuminating in terms of the problems with the Intern market. One aspect of the market that is absolutely despicable that was not touched upon however are organizations that expect students/young inexperienced workers to PAY up to $5000.00 for them to secure a high profile internship for them. These companies that accept interns that did very little to acquire the position, have no qualifications to promote of their own, and that are taking no initiative to be noticed and be offered a position are a serious part of the problem of encapsulating only a select few (those who can afford it) into the intern market. anyway, here is one of these organizations' website: http://www.summerinternships.com/guarantee… I would love to see this looked further into as it was just something I came across when looking for work this summer and was appalled when I figured out what it actually was..
