I think its also interesting to note that not all B Busters are filled with Randal Graves like characters who argue constantly about the merit of this film or that and are actually filled with kids who don't care, their parents made them get the job, and know nothing about movies except the titles of those that were just released. And although I did grow up in Jersey, I am sad to say my local video stores were of no help...

I am very glad you honed in on "wandering around in a video store, even a shitty one" as an essential part of a cinephilic education.

There are, one could counter, many fine websites and sharing methods, licit and ill-, where it's possible to find more, different, better movies than ever; many of these sites (along with innumerable discussion boards) even feature forums where recommendations and lively discussion are forthcoming. The Auteurs is a phenomenal (virtual) place.

But it strikes me that many of these sites are more specialized and insular--thus less porous, and less likely to foster curiosity and sudden unexpected discovery--than a real physical place.

Whoops: another important cultural benefit of physical video stores (which I neglected to mention) is that they give young cinephiles a place to work and score free rentals, so they can improve their film educations. (Yes, even Blockbusters fulfill that role.)
