So... build lots of state run schools... which turn into Madrassas... which produce more Taliban (the word Taliban means 'students' if you were paying attention)... then we declare victory and airlift the last US nationals out via helicopters from the roof of the US embassy in a few years when the Taliban retake Kabul. I have a strange feeling of deja vu.

I have a better idea: do not concern ourselves with internal structure of Afghan politics: if they want a weak central government with narco-funded warlords dominating the regions, well that is just fine by me. Our job is to kill the Taliban wherever they are found because of their role enabling 9/11.

Although I might be uselessly literalizing an idiomatic expression, I dare say that 'killing two birds with one stone' could be -- in this context and, moreover, in this post-Flight 1549 world -- a rather dangerous notion.

Nonetheless, I fully agree with you that Operation Come Fly With Us might be a great way to create new jobs and spark up, in various ways, the economies of so many host nations.

one thing you forgot to mention was how many jobs would be created through the hiring and training of stewardspeople (flight attendants). back in the early days of commercial flight, flight attendants were typically unskilled high-school or even college graduates- young people looking for work who were also attracted by the notion of travel and adventure.
