For those researching the legality and practice of unpaid internships, my 2002 law review article, "The Employment Law Rights of Student Interns," may be of interest. I promise that it's not overly burdened with legalese.

I have started a FB group to address this, "Internships for Education":

http://tinyurl.com/4yp3m2c

It's a "closed" group, meaning you have to ask to join; I only do that as no employer needs to know you're in it. It's my hope to get enough like-minded people together to do something about the problem, including the possibility of starting a nonprofit clearinghouse to "certify" companies that use internships in compliance with the law, and to whistle-blow on those out of compliance to the appropriate attorneys general.

Feel free to join!!

This is actually an extremely important issue right now. Most internships are exploitive and offer no real training or hope of obtaining full-time employment.

I am a current college student and present unpaid intern and this article and the accompanying NYtimes piece have both been extremely illuminating in terms of the problems with the Intern market. One aspect of the market that is absolutely despicable that was not touched upon however are organizations that expect students/young inexperienced workers to PAY up to $5000.00 for them to secure a high profile internship for them.
