Gerwig made her first film appearance, sort of, during senior year of college, in 2006. Joe Swanberg (himself just 24 at the time), the most prolific and straightforward director from the group of filmmakers just beginning to be called "mumblecore," used voicemails and cameraphone self-portraits Gerwig sent to her then-boyfriend as a sort of offscreen chorus of missed connections in LOL, his second film.
