Noah Baumbach, an admirer of Swanberg's films, whose debut Kicking and Screaming concerns the same quarterlife crisis that afflicts Hannah, poached Gerwig to play Florence, foil to Ben Stiller's Greenberg (in a film that, many observed, could and perhaps should have been called Florence). When Gerwig was heard to say, "I've been out of college as long as I was in it, and no one cares whether or not I wake up in the morning," Baumbach wrote it into the script.
