Hannah Takes the Stairs (Swanberg, 2007)
A film that was most notable for being an idea-lab collaboration between film-festival friends Swanberg, Andrew Bujalski, Mark Duplass, and other familiar performers and directors, Hannah Takes the Stairs kicked off IFC Center's movement-defining mumblecore series "The New Talkies: Generation DIY" in the summer of 2007. It was Gerwig's breakthrough: as Hannah, she affectingly embodied postcollegiate drift, career anxiety, creative aspiration and romantic ambivalence.
