Gerwig's two big studio movies thus far saw her cast as Russell Brand's dressed-down, super-sweet love interest in the Arthur remake, and as one of Natalie Portman's several BFFs in the fuckbuddy rom-com No Strings Attached (above). In the latter, her low, drawn-out, slightly dopey underwater delivery, like Eeyore replicating Warren Beatty's old trick of letting them see you think of the next line in real-time, carved out a zone of spontaneity in an otherwise shrilly boxed-in high-concept movie.
