From Denmark comes A Soap, a love story between Charlotte, a 32-year-old woman who has recently decided to leave her traditional life and the live-in boyfriend that went with it, and Veronica (aka Ulrick), a shy, depressed pre-op transsexual who opted out of a traditional lifestyle a long time ago. After Charlotte moves into the apartment above Veronica’s, they meet and eventually begin an unsteady courtship. Their encounters result from the closeness of apartment dwelling and to emphasize this proximity, the camera never leaves the interior of the building.
Veronica is obsessed with soap operas, which are used as a structural element and as an analogy of Veronica and Charlotte’s own story; but the analogy is shaky and almost extraneous to the plot, despite the film’s title.
Nevertheless, A Soap respects its audience and gives equal weight to dramatic and comic moments. An engaging and intelligent film, A Soap is propelled by its strong performances. Opens November 3 at Quad Cinema
