Across the City and Back to the Bars
Jennifer O’Connor’s Guide to Her Personal New York
Make no mistake about it: New York City can be a harrowing place to live. So it’s always nice to have likeminded people lend a hand, offering suggestions that will help you make sense of it all. And who better than one of our favorite New York-based songwriters, Jennifer O’Connor? She recently released Over the Mountain, Across the Valley and Back to the Stars (Matador Records), which stands as one of the dark-horse great records of the year, full of the kind of indie folk-pop we thought became extinct when another former Matador artist suddenly became awful. On 10/13, she’ll be performing at the Mercury Lounge with Portastatic; on other days, she’ll be doing these things…
Current neighborhood:
Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Favorite NYC venue:
Mercury Lounge - it’s great to play there because they have great sound and it’s great to see a show there for the same reason.
Least favorite NYC venue:
Rothko.
Favorite NYC band/artist at the moment:
The Naysayer. Anna Padgett is the Naysayer and she just released a new record called Smoke Reality on Red
Panda Records. She’s an extremely talented songwriter.
Favorite record store:
Sound Fix in Williamsburg. Well organized! And clean! And I can walk there.
Most used subway line:
The G, but I drive a lot too.
Favorite drinking establishment:
Metropolitan [in Williamsburg]. It’s a great bar, great outdoor patio, great people.
Favorite restaurant:
Probably Dumont or Greenpoint Coffeehouse.
Favorite takeout:
San Diego, a local Mexican joint in Greenpoint, or something from the Garden.
Favorite place to shop for clothes:
H&M I guess, Beacon’s Closet, and sometimes Target.
Favorite NYC-centric website or blog:
I like Brooklyn Vegan and Oh My Rockness.
Tourist attraction most worth checking out:
Central Park
