During an especially long and prolific career, Neel’s approach to nudes evolved from stark, dire and alienating moments of darkness to more hopeful and comfortable encounters with her subjects’ bodies. Throughout, Neel maintained an active role in the evolving shape of American modernism, and her contributions fill the galleries at Zwirner & Wirth uptown and David Zwirner in Chelsea.
