We can never quite figure out what’s going on in Piedilato’s massive paintings, with their enigmatic mix of abstract minimalism, expressionism, ornate patterns and distorted figurative scenes in which the protagonists seem more often than not to be horses. The overgrown wallpaper-like backdrops make us think Art Nouveau, but the industrial brick forms are rather Giorgio de Chirico if not straight up contemporary conceptual. Whatever this young Brooklyn painter is doing we hope he keeps at it, making some of the most interesting and ambitious canvases we’ve seen out in Bushwick in a while.
