Anika, Slowdance

Tue., Sept. 27, 8 p.m. 2011; $15, $17 at the door

Anika, the Berlin-based singer’s self-titled debut, was one of last year’s most slept-on delights. Produced by Portishead's Geoff Barrow, the record used mysterious drum sounds and motorik bass to pervert old 60s pop classics through the lenses of dub and punk. It ended up sounding like Nico, living happily in the 30th century. Tonight, Barrow himself, with side-band Beak>, act as her formidable backing band. Slowdance, a stylish Brooklyn group we still think you need to hear, are set to open.
