Driving a cab is hard work: long hours, crummy pay, high stress… did we mention the hours? Summer in this city is normally a time when people do whatever they can to get out of the city at all costs — but what about the cabbies?

No, I have no time right now to go anywhere. The summers I work very hard because every fall I go home for at least a month. I see my family, I take things back to them. At least a month every year and then some years two or three months. You can get the flight for… I think I paid 700, 800 dollars last year. So, right now I have to work so I can go away later.

I am a musician, too. I only do this part time. So I am hoping that I can get away for a little while to play with a band that I am in. Sort of blues type of music. Not a big trip, but we might go to a few towns upstate and play. So, I would like to do that.

Yeah, I guess I’m having fun this summer. I go to the clubs sometimes. But you can do that in the winter, right? I don’t really care for the beach. Too many people there. The park is ok, I guess, but I live in Queens — not really near any good parks. I think this summer I’d like to see a pro baseball game. The Mets are good this year… that’s what I’ll do. I live close to the stadium. The Staten Island Yankees? They have a team over there? Maybe I could do that too. The tickets would be cheaper, right?

This year I am going on vacation for the first time in five years. It’s not that I’m doing better for myself, but my wife has been promoted at her job — she works for a bank. We’re taking our two kids to Disney World! They are seven and nine and it’s all they talk about. They have been bugging me forever. We won’t stay at Disney World of course — too expensive. But my wife has never been to Florida — we’ll be staying on the beach and driving to the park. I cannot wait for a break from driving, yes!
