From N.W.A. to his weed-drenched Friday series to the tamer Barbershop series, Ice Cube has come a long way, baby. That’s not necessarily a good thing. Once known for hard-bitten raps and smoking trees, Cube has devolved into a middle-of-the-road actor who appears in boring family films like Are We Done Yet?
In this sequel to Are We There Yet?, Cube reprises his role as Nick Persons, the harried husband who’s married to Suzanne (Nia Long) and adopted her two kids, Lindsey (Aleisha Allen) and Kevin (Philip Daniel Bolden). This urban family decides to move to the sticks and buys a lemon of a house. Cube spends most of the movie prat-falling through the roof, floors and walls. Meanwhile, Suzanne’s pregnant. In the unenviable role of the “wacky white guy,” John McGinley as Chuck is the object of Nick’s scorn, but when he learns that Chuck’s wife recently died, Nick relents and they become friends again, rebuilding the house until everyone’s happy and the baby is born.
The real question you’ll be asking about 15 minutes into Are We Done Yet?: Is this excruciating excuse for a movie over yet?
