I want to quit smoking. I’m a social smoker, I only do it when I’m out with people, and I figure I might as well get it out now. I don’t typically make resolutions; New Year’s is just a starting point to quit. I’m just going to do it cold turkey. Willpower. No gum or patches.

I used to make New Year’s resolutions, but they hardly ever work out, you know? Like last year, my resolution was to say “yes” more, say yes to everything. That lasted a couple of months and I sort of forgot about it, and then halfway through June I was like, oh, whoops, I’m supposed to be saying yes more. And it lasted again for maybe two weeks. I don’t think people change like that; New Year’s is sort of arbitrary.

New Year’s resolutions… I don’t make them. They never work out. Oh, I’m gonna clean my place, I tell myself. Or, I’m gonna paint my place. That never happens. Or, oh, I’ll drink less. That was rich. Or, oh, I’m gonna keep in touch with people, call them. Then I call them, and think, Why’d I call that guy? That guy’s a knucklehead.
