No, it’s not an art history exercise to bring about a revival of a medium that was most widely practiced during the Middle Ages, but it is a really interesting project with a very impressive lineup. Over the last three years, the London-based organization Banners of Persuasion commissioned thirteen contemporary artists to explore an unfamiliar medium: hand-woven tapestries. The results have a set of international art stars adapting their signature aesthetics as best possible to the new medium. So Kara Walker continues in her Gothic, gory plantation aesthetic with a massive, visually rich piece, while avaf creates a dizzying collage creature that looks inherently incompatible with tapestry.
