Beat Connection
Surf Noir EP
(Free Digital Download)
Named after a sorta-recent LCD Soundsystem song, and offering a debut EP that could've been christened by the "Beachy 00s Indie Internet Name Generator," Seattle duo Beat Connection conjure not-unheard fears that they might be working from a keyhole-sized frame of reference. Despite the fuzzy guitar head-fake of opening track "Sunburn," the Surf Noir EP contains convicted dance music that isn't too tiresomely au courant. In place of lo-fi strum-and-bash, there are relaxed, late-summer-appropriate house beats. The pop immediacy is upped on select bits, and its standout "Silver Screen" nearly brings to mind the formal warmth of mid-80s Peter Gabriel. Elsewhere, it's just as undercooked as you might expect a free download to be. But the mix of flavors remains intriguing.
