Best of Brooklyn 2013: Film

Best Staunchly Indie Theater

This quirky DUMBO theater has gone through different programmers, but it remains committed to showing great festival-direct independent films that otherwise would tragically never play New York.

Best Distributor
Factory 25

This Clinton Hill label puts out beautiful objects—like its DVD-vinyl combo packages—but more importantly it releases beautiful films. Its track record is nearly flawless.

Best Movie Ticket Prices
The Alpine

Every time we mention this Bay Ridge theater to someone, they roll their eyes or shrink away in disgust. But we go here all the time. Full-price, non-3D admission is $9 every day. For that, we don’t care if it’s not always the cleanest or most civilized place we’ve ever been.

Best Curation

“Booed at Cannes” was one of the best repertory programs we ever heard of, and that was just one of the many awesome series shown here all year. Also? The first-run stuff that comes through here is always just what we want to see (that’s not playing at the Alpine).
