Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got, and taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot — wouldn’t you like to get away? Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and where they’re always glad you came. Thing is, what can you do to ensure that everyone is, in fact, happy to see your face refracted through the underside of one of their pint glasses on a daily basis?

I think everyone here’s a regular. If I single one out, everybody gets mad. So... I’ll just say all the guys from The Today Show. Yeah, they come in here when we open just about every morning at 9am. They work from about midnight to 9 or so, after which they’re ready for a drink — just like you and your nine to five job. They’re good guys. I don’t usually work that morning shift, but when I do, they’re friendly and good tippers.

My best regular doesn’t get impatient. If he comes in during a busy time, he doesn’t expect special treatment — he’s very laid back and happy to be here. He knows what he wants before he orders... which means I know what he wants before he orders. Which is a Grey Goose Citron martini with a twist. Does he drink a lot? Yeah. He certainly does. Does he tip good after that? Yeah. I wish all my customers could be like this guy.

Yeah sure — this guy down at the corner sitting there right now. His name is Jack. He always comes in here with the same old story about how he’s getting kicked out of his apartment — they’re doing a lot of development around here and a whole lot of people are having to move. He’s always talking about going to court or getting kicked out. But now I think they’re paying him money to move out. So I guess he’ll have to come up with some new stories.

Well, there’s really only one guy here really — Steve Dunleavy. This is his bar. [‘What’s Dunleavy like?’ asks our intrepid correspondent.] He’s Dunleavy. He’s a character. He just makes it worthwhile to come into work sometimes. [‘Any recent entertaining stories about Dunleavy?’ our intrepid correspondent tries again.] His life is entertaining.
