Every few years, Built To Spill frontman Doug Martsch gets sick of playing backyard basketball and resurfaces to remind us that the guitar solo is still an important part of rock music. On the band’s sixth studio LP, Martsch and company have put together one of their better collections in recent memory, and at a time when most of their peers from the great indie-rock comeuppance of the mid 90s are in permanent hibernation, You In Reverse cements BTS as one of the few stalwarts still creating memorable music. The eight-minute plus ‘Goin Against Your Mind’ opens the album and may in fact be its strongest track a revved up epic that brings to mind previous benchmarks off the Perfect From Now On LP. From there Martsch leads his troops through everything from the jangle pop of ‘Liar’, to the reggae infused final moments of ‘Mess With Time’ — proof that his much documented infatuation with dub was more than just the marginally reclusive beardo screwing with interviewers. Is You In Reverse Built To Spill’s best album to date? Nah, but it’s a welcome addition to an already bountiful catalogue that overflows with wonderful songs.
