Camera Obscura

Let’s Get Out of This Country (Merge Records)

Let’s Get Out of This Country is Camera Obscura’s third full-length record, and in a move similar to what Belle and Sebastian did when they chose to work with producer Trevor Horn on Dear Catastrophe Waitress, they’ve foregone the simple, lo-fi production of 2004’s Underachievers Please Try Harder in favor of a more substantial, full sound. The lead track, “Lloyd, I’m Ready to be Heartbroken,” is a radio-ready, upbeat number that’s totally uncharacteristic, but instantly addictive. The pace slows a bit toward the middle, but the there’s still enough stylistic flourishes and clever turns of phrase to make for an enjoyable listen all the way through. It might be nice to see them reveal slightly broader influences, but at the moment, they’re doing the indie-pop thing better than just about anyone.
