We can’t really figure out why, probably something to do with her unusual perspectives and the occasional surreal still life, but we don’t see anything even remotely conservative in the nostalgic, neo-figurative drawings and paintings of Queens-based artist Clare Gill. Drawn from a mix of family history, anecdotal experiences and pure fiction, Gill depicts her subjects in a washed-out, drained palette of light and soft hues that suggest a fog of memory and times past hanging over every image. Her brushstrokes echo that sense of vague uncertainty, layering paints in broad, gestural swaths rather than precise daubs.
