Dabrye

Two/Three (Ghostly International

I’ll always musically associate Detroit as the city that birthed Motown, the MC5, and the Stooges. But of course, Detroit has also widely been known  over the last 20 years as a world capital of serious techno. Such a time period is nothing to sneeze at, and the future of Detroit techno is alive and well, as proven by their ever-successful annual Electronic Music Festival and, more importantly, their latest rising contemporary beat maker Tadd Mullinx, aka Dabrye. While having his hand in all kinds of electronic pies, Two/Three is certainly his most hip-hop effort to date. The record is are strewn with avant garde, experimental beats that reference conventional hip-hop: moody, dark, dense and choppy, yet crisp and propulsive, providing a nice interplay of retro and futuristic. Dabrye’s programming skills are forward thinking on his use of the analog synthesizer and drum machines — a predominant trait of his city’s brand of techno. Look for guest spots from MF Doom, J. Dilla, Vast Aire and plenty of other hip-hop hitters. If you’re a fan of Prefuse 73, you’ll definitely dig Dabrye… perhaps even more.
