Pretty much every genre of music frequently used to categorize Deftones inadequately labels the band: “alternative metal,” “post grunge,” and “indie rock” all fall short of capturing the group’s sucker-punching sound. A better term might be “experimental punk” or, more simply, “badass”: the early-90s metal pioneers were among the first to rely on the soft-LOUD-soft screaming-whisper combo that has become their legacy and was an inspiration for so many bands in alt-rock’s heyday. What to expect? Screamed lyrics, hushed murmurs, and heavy riffing—not that we’ll make fun of you for wearing earplugs or anything.
