Though they initially evoke the grand landscape tradition (remember the Hudson Valley School?), Robinson's spectacular oil paintings trick viewers with their plays of light, color and shade, hiding vast fields of abstract expressionism where classical compositions unfurl into sparkly and swirling patterns and shapes.
