For a big-deal British pop star whose songs are commercial enough to plausibly slip into a TV talent show’s song rotation, Ellie Goulding is still a much weirder artist than you might expect. One of 2012’s very best singles, “Anything Could Happen,” is optimistic and car-commercial shiny but still somehow carries the chilly disconnect of an android with a malfunctioning emotion board. And she’s a total pro with a huge voice, which often bodes quite well.
