Eryc Taylor Talks of Travel, West Side Story and Anna Wintour

Eryc Taylor, artistic director of the eponymous dance company, will be presenting an evening of new works at The Ailey Citigroup Theater on October 6, and took a break from rehearsing for that performance to answer some of our questions.

The L Magazine: What long-term ideas and projects do you hope to develop in the months and years ahead?
Eryc Taylor: I am in communication with The Chelsea Art Museum and hope to work with them on a Dance/Art installation at the Museum. Future projects looking ahead are possible tours to Fort Lauderdale, Paris and Australia.

What�€™s the best show you�€™ve seen recently?
I recently saw the revival of West Side Story at the Palace Theater. I loved the choreography.

What has been your most positive experience working in the arts in New York City?
The easy access to talented dancers, costume designers and composers.

What has been your worst experience working in the arts in New York City?
Trying to find affordable rehearsal space.

What�€™s your favorite New York City venue to work in?
My favorite venue to rehearse at is Dance Theater Workshop. The floors, location and spaciousness are a couple of my favorite things about rehearsing there.

Where do you like to go see shows in New York?
I like seeing shows outdoors near the river or, in a park.

If you could no longer work in performance, what would you do?
I�€™d love to work for a travel publication.

If you had an opportunity to work in any other sector of the arts, what would it be?
Costume design: I love working with color, fabric and textiles.

What�€™s the best show in another sector of the arts that you�€™ve seen recently?
The movie documentary about Vogue magazine, The September Issue.
