The folks at Galapagos are so kind, always giving you something to look at while you have a few beers. Now, every Friday through the end of June, they’re offering up the Evolve series, with a different act holding court in the Back Room.
March brings the inimitable Neal Medlyn, with a different musical duet each week. I was treated to and tickled by the very first show, a touching patchwork of the greatest hits of faded superstar, Lionel Ritchie.
It’s not a cabaret, it’s not karaoke nor is it plain old lip-synching; it’s a full-blown opera. The hilarious and nimble Medlyn has crafted a backstory with a rich cast of characters (including Queen Brenda Diane and more unicorns than ever graced my girly purple bedroom in 1982), voiced entirely by Ritchie’s smooth sounds.
Part Napoleon Dynamite, part love affair Dynasty style, the show is great fun. Medlyn has the charisma of a 70s game show host, boundless energy with surprises at every turn, like suicide and a fellated unicorn!
Future shows pair Medlyn with Adrienne Truscott of the Wau Wau Sisters and Kenny Mellman of Kiki and Herb. I strongly suggest you catch one, if not all of them.
