The area surrounding Brooklyn’s McCarren Park is ground zero for an architectural standoff between Greenpoint’s modest storefronts and the high-rise luxury condos sprouting up across North Williamsburg. A surprising addition to the former camp is the recently opened Five Leaves. The hyped bar is best known for its late investor, actor Heath Ledger, but Leaves pulls off a decidedly un-Hollywood vibe, with nary a VIP nook or conspicuous amenity. Five Leaves’ highly anticipated opening was definitely not due to the bar’s own merits, but to the hysteria surrounding Ledger’s demise. It’s a welcome addition to Greenpoint (and a worthy neighbor of long-popular spots like Enid’s, Matchless and Park Luncheonette) but beyond the novelty factor, it’s unlikely to ever be a destination for non-residents. --Andrea Rosen
