Based on the experiences of the filmmakers and real-life couple, Susan Buice and Arin Crumley, Four Eyed Monsters, a uniquely New York story, chronicles their encounter and ensuing relationship. After exploring the bar scene and not liking what he finds, Arin turns to the internet for help, where he eventually meets Susan. A courtship ensues that is anything but traditional and includes stalking, a vow of silence and constant mediation. While there are a few conflicts, there is not a great deal of plot here. The constant play and experimentation with different types of media is also a little overdone. The best moments of the film are its self-mocking ones, when the tone is less serious and self-important. What the film lacks in romance, it tries to make up in reality- based moments, but those don’t necessarily translate into a compelling story.
Opens December 1 at Cinema Village
