Inspired by the Surrealists’ interest in free-associative and improvised production, curators Ben Alper and Anastasia Cazabon organized this experiment along with 18 other photographers: The first participant made a photograph, which was then forwarded on to the second photographer who, without knowing the source or the next person in the group, made a photograph in response and forwarded it along to a third and so on. The resulting chain mail-like, subconsciously self-curated series of works reveals not only the temperament and mode of thought of each participant, but also the collective consciousness threaded throughout.
