Gallery founder Gwendolyn Skaggs brings what initially seem like two very different artists together for this exhibition — "A Matter of Life and Death," in which Hara’s surreal, colorful symbolism seems to represent life and Madore’s Biblical black and white ink drawings that recall medieval etchings often evoke death. But that opposition, only just set up, begins to crumble: The specter of death, absurd and obscene, lurks in each of Hara’s intimate drawings and paintings of parents, children and hybrid creatures; and the very essence of life seems to be at stake in Madore’s mystical visions.
