Melding the intensely dystopian aesthetic of neo-expressionism’s wild colors, radical discontinuities and unannounced shifts in time and perspective with a kind of romantic classicism that evokes vast Renaissance landscapes, Bas presents visions of dandy-ish figures participating in upper-class rituals and rites of passage against backdrops ripe with lush colors, overgrown organic forms, innumerable abstract threats, possibilities and variables. In these often massive paintings, Miami-based Bas depicts a culture clinging to its most entrenched and problematic practices as its very world collapses and explodes.
