This city is filled with wonderful folks working tirelessly on thankless causes that most people don't really give a second thought to--they are all heroes. Among them is Emelinda Narvaez, founder of EarthAngels dog and cat rescue, a ragtag group of selfless volunteers who rescue innocent would-be pets from horrible situations of cruelty and abuse, nursing them back to health, then finding them loving homes. Gandhi wasn't messing around when he said: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." And neither is Emelinda. (Watch her in action every weekend evening in Union Square, outside Petco, where she has adorable cats and dogs for adoption.)
