Hott Tickets! with Mike Conklin
We never write about sports here at The L, because it’s almost impossible to do without sounding like either a) a total douche bag or b) a sentimental nerd who just can’t quite find the words to explain why the Rangers’ 1994 Stanley Cup win was so life-altering. So I’ll refrain from discussing how great it feels the first time you walk through the tunnel and see the bright green grass of the outfield. And I’ll refrain from telling you why the Mets’ starting rotation isn’t as bad as people are saying it is. I’ll just say this: Baseball’s starting, and I think you should forget about your indie cred for a minute, round up a few friends and spend an afternoon drinking shitty beer and eating delicious peanuts. Even if you don’t care about the game, you’ll get some color on that pasty white skin of yours, and you’ll look way hotter in your new MySpace photos.
4/13 Rhett Miller, at Bowery Ballroom,
If you’re not too jealous of his scary good looks, this dude’s still worth seeing live, as his magnetic stage presence is enough to make up for his lackluster new album.
4/14 +/-, at Northsix
These guys have been around for so long now, that I probably shouldn’t keep calling them “ex-members of Versus.” Especially considering no one actually likes Versus as much as I do.
4/14 Human Television, at R&R
With a record coming out in the first week of May, you’re going to be hearing a lot about these Floridians and their perfect pop songs.
4/18 Calexico, at Virgin Megastore
If I could rewrite my review of their new record, I’d say it’s so good that I’m physically incapable of listening to anything else.
4/20 Robert Pollard, at Irving Plaza
Part of me kind of wishes Pollard had taken some time off after the breakup of Guided By Voices, but the thought of him making a ton of drunken “420” jokes is tempting.
