As you may have noticed, there’s not a whole hell of a lot going on in terms of live rock music during the next two weeks. But I assure you, there’s no need to be worried. You see, just about every good local band, plus just about every good not-local band, has organized their schedule so that they’ll be in Austin, Texas between March 14 and March 17 for the SXSW Music Festival. And since all the bands will be down there, well, then all the publicists and label folks and managers and writers will be as well, ostensibly trying to identify enough Next Big Things to take us through to CMJ in the fall, but mostly just trying to drink as much free booze as possible and eat as much delicious salsa as possible. I’ll be joining in on the fun this year, and lucky for you, the higher-ups around here paid for my flight, so I have no choice but to document the whole thing at thelmagazine.com. I make no promises regarding the journalistic quality of my reporting, but I do promise to post something, anything, each and every day, maybe even multiple times a day, no matter how drunk I am. Deal? Deal.
Also of note:
3/14 The Shins at Madison Square Garden
I know, I didn’t say particularly nice things about the record, but if you’re feeling it, good for you. Have fun.
3/17 The Pogues at Roseland
Surely, there are worse ways to spend St. Paddy’s, like, say, hanging around the perimeter of a stupid parade with a bunch of clueless, homophobic retards.
3/20 Fujiya & Miyagi at Mercury Lounge
Oh my god, remember how much you used to like Stereolab? Yeah, so did these folks.
3/22 The Fratellis at Mercury Lounge
I might wind up looking like an idiot in a few months, but as of right now, I think I love the Fratellis.
