Hott Tickets!

I spent all of August listening to Kanye West and Vampire Weekend. Then I spent all of September listening to Jens Lekman and Bob Dylan ca. 1975, including Volume 5 of the Bootleg Series, which features a version of ‘Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You’ that somehow puts the one on Nashville to shame. For October, I think I’m going to listen exclusively to Ferraby Lionheart and Chris Garneau, both of whom just released records that aren’t getting the love they deserve. Lionheart does soulful, Beatle-esque piano pop, coming off like a far less miserable (and, sorry, less boring) Elliott Smith. Garneau utilizes the piano as well, but only as quiet accompaniment for his gentle, touching and very high-pitched confessionals. Fortunately for all of us, they’ve both got area shows coming up. Garneau is at Joe’s Pub on 9/28, and Lionheart is at the Mercury Lounge on 10/2. See you there.

Also of Note:

9/27  Yeasayer at the Cake Shop
The New York band with the most confusing to pronounce name also happens to be one of our best.

9/29  Magnolia Electric Co. & The Watson Twins at Gramercy Theatre
If for no other reason than to ask the Watson Twins what the fuck happened to Jenny Lewis.

10/5  Diplo at Hiro Ballroom
It’s the New Yorker festival, so you’re probably not going to get in. So feel free to listen to his Pitchfork mix instead.
