The day we went to print with this issue, word came that the Hold Steady were bumping the digital release of their new record, Stay Positive, from July 15th to June 17th. Everyone downloaded it when it leaked the day before Memorial Day weekend anyway, of course, so the only real effect this has on anything is that print publications like this one are left having mistimed their coverage of it, further proving that we are increasingly vulnerable to the fast-paced world of the internet, and ultimately just making me sort of sad. But I’ll be ok. We all will.
I’ll have a full review in the next issue, but in the meantime, you’ll want to go see the band play the first of the summer’s Jelly NYC shows on June 29th at McCarren Park Pool, which will be full of hipsters, old dudes with faded tattoos and hopefully even some of their children. There is currently only one thing in my life that I’m really looking forward to, and it’s hearing Craig Finn sing the line “Raise a toast to Saint Joe Strummer/I think he might have been our only decent teacher” to a pool full of drunk people, at which point I could actually pass out like a teenage girl at a Michael Jackson concert.
Also of note:
6/19 R.E.M.,Modest Mouse and The National at MSG
Aw, don’t worry… when Modest Mouse plays, just walk around and look at all the numbers the Rangers have retired.
6/21 The Cure at Radio City Music Hall
Well, as long as we’re going with bands that were important to me in the 8th grade…
