I’m a little bit bummed that I still have to talk about this, because the last time I checked it was no longer 2002, but Andrew W.K. is playing the Highline Ballroom on Saturday, August 4th, and I really don’t think you should go. I really don’t think anyone should go, actually, but it’s you guys I’m concerned about. You like good stuff. Good music, good films, good books... good television, even, and you’ve worked hard to make that the case. So, while I recognize that watching Andrew W.K. play bone-headed music for retarded head-banging frat-boys will serve as an escape from whatever shitty things are going on in your life, and an opportunity to have some fun, to remember what you were like back before you had good taste in things, I still think you should fight the urge, because you’re sending the wrong message to people who might actually respect your opinion. Here’s the thing: Andrew W.K.’s music is not fun. It’s just empty, and there’s a difference, or at least there should be. By going out and dancing to stuff like this, we’re sending the message that better art is by nature less fun, which we all know isn’t the case. Go dance to the new Spoon record, dance to the new Kanye track, dance to Bruce Springsteen. If you do, you’ll be celebrating something other than a night of feeling free to act stupid; you’ll be celebrating the fact that you’re not.
